Featured Workshop

Understanding the Landscape Artistically

Wednesday – Friday
September 12, 13 & 14, 2007
 9:00am – 4:00pm

Save the Date!

The workshop will include brief lectures and daily demonstrations by Don Demers.  Most of the work will be done outdoors and supplemented by studio work.  Students will be expected to create one to two paintings each day.  These will be done "plein air" unless it rains.  Oils are preferable but watercolors and acrylics are acceptable.  Some painting experience is required, but beginners are certainly welcome.  The student will be instructed on understanding what they see outside and how to translate it into artistic terms like shape, design, color, drawing, etc. with the goal of creating "natural" looking paintings.

Don discusses painting as a language and the painter needs to learn how to translate the natural "real" world into artistic portrayals.  Students should not expect to create finished works in the class, but to embrace new information and explore new territory with their paints.  Don does not do group critiques unless he sees something everyone can benefit from.  Painting is a solitary task and Don deals with each student's issues individually. Students will need outdoor painting gear and painting canvases or panels no larger than 11"x14".

A member of the Guild of Boston Artists and the American Society of Marine Painters, Don is a record eleven-time award winner at the Mystic International Marine Exhibition.  He has been featured in American Artist and he recently produced a painting Video entitled The Outdoor Studio.  He conducts workshops both nationally and internationally.
